Theo A. Niewold PhD (1958) is an immunologist/experimental pathobiologist by training. From 1986 1993 (PhD in 1990), he was assistant professor at the Department of Veterinary Pathology, University of Utrecht, the Netherlands. The next 4 years he worked as a visiting scientist on invitation at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, Knoxville, USA. From 1996-2005 he was senior scientist pathobiology at the Animal Sciences Group of Wageningen University in Lelystad, the Netherlands. Since 2005, he is Professor Nutrition and Health at the University of Leuven, Belgium, and scientific head of the experimental farm from 2010-2014. He is also a member of the management team of the Leuven Food Science and Nutrition Research Centre (LFoRCe) launched in 2010. Since 2015, he is a member of the expert group 'Nutrition and health, including food safety' of the Belgian Supreme Health Council. He is (co) author of over 250 publications, and invited speaker at over 70 scientific conferences and industry seminars. Current interests are pathophysiology, host-pathogen interaction, mucosal immunity, innate immunity and inflammation, nutritional immunology, functional food and feed in animal models, alternatives to antibiotics, intestinal genomics and proteomics, and intestinal health biomarkers.
